Chamen is a large village which has grown up around the Trans Gambia Highway which runs from the coast inland, parallel with the River Gambia. As a result, poverty there is not so widespread as in the more remote villages but there are still many families in need of help.
In 2007, HELPING opened a nursery in Chamen which caters for 75 children aged between three and seven. The building has two classrooms, storeroom and toilets. HELPING provided furniture, stationery supplies, toys and books and has created a play area. All children receive free school meals and a set of uniform. The nursery has three teachers two have completed a three-year training course paid for by HELPING and who now receiving living allowances from HELPING.
